Moexiprilat is the pharmacologically active metabolite of Moexipril. Formation of Moexiprilat is caused by hydrolysis of a Moexipril’s ethyl ester group. Moexiprilat competitively inhibits ACE, thereby blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II. This prevents the actions of the potent vasoconstrictor angiotensin II and leads to vasodilatation. This agent also prevents angiotensin II-induced aldosterone secretion by the adrenal cortex, thereby promoting diuresis and natriuresis. Moexiprilat showed an extended duration of action owing to a long terminal pharmacokinetic half-life and produced a persistent ACE inhibition.   NCATS
