Phenylmercuric acetate is a Fungicide. Phenylmercuric acetate has promising antifungal activity for the treatment of ocular fungal infections. In vitro studies have indicated that a vaginal contraceptive made of phenylmercuric acetate is an effective chemoprophylactic against Neisseria gonorrheae, Treponema pallidum, Candida albicans, Trichomonas vaginalis, and herpes simplex virus type 2. 2 clinical trials have shown that phenylmercuric acetate offered significant protection against gonorrheal infection. Phenylmercuric acetate was widely used as a spermicidal contraceptive.   NCATS
