Sulfaguanidine is used to treat the gastrointestinal infections particularly bacillary dysentery. Sulfaguanidine is a sulfonamide antibiotic that blocks the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase in bacteria. Sulfonamides are active against Gram positive bacteria and Gram negative bacteria. NCATS
